New Wednesday Feature: Diary of an Organizer-Part One

July 28, 2010 • Uncategorized

As a professional organizer a question I get asked a lot is, “Do I practice what I preach?” “Can I possibly be as organized as I seem at clients houses?” “Does my house look like that?”

Well the answers is yes, I am always like this. Just ask my husband, Matt! Sometimes it’s great, I can find things when I need them, which is the biggest benefit. For example, my camping stuff is organized and labeled.

However, sometimes its maddening. I recently came home from a camping trip, and when we arrived home were hungry and tired. The last thing I wanted to do was unpack. However, our home is small enough that the camping equipment is in the way if its not away. So I started putting things back on their shelves, despite being tired.

While it’s great that I have a place for everything, and can put things away quickly, sometimes I wonder what it would be like to leave things out. To let them sit around for a few days, or to not have a place for items. Usually at this point, my eye starts to twitch and I go back to putting things away 🙂

There is a saying, “What gets written down gets attended to, and what gets attended to gets done.”

Write down your organizing goals and hold yourself accountable for completing them.

I know it seems like a big chore, but you’ll be glad you did it once you’re done!
