Diary of an Organizer- Stop! Or Life Will Just Pass You By

Time out

How often do you take time out from all you have to do?  Chances are, not often.  We have a zillion things to do.  And we all don’t stop going until the day is done.  Now, I am going to force you to stop and think about the last time you really relaxed, or your last vacation.  Remember how much better and more productive you felt when you returned home?

You can have that feeling all the time by scheduling “time out” for yourself.  It could be a TV program you enjoy watching, reading a magazine, or doing your nails.  For guys, maybe it’s watching a hockey game, playing Playstation, or playing football with the guys.  For couples, maybe you schedule a night out a week with a sitter, or family member taking the kids.  Or book a couples massage once a month.  Enjoy a glass of wine together.  Be creative, and make sure it is something that makes you feel good inside.  I love to schedule some time to read a non-school book, or do nails with my aunt and cousin.  My husband likes pick-up hockey, or playing Playstation with our cousins.  Together, we love to hike.  We’re trying to climb all of the highest peaks in each of the New England states this year.

If you can’t remember to schedule it yourself, ask a friend to help you breakaway and find the time.  Matt often does this for me, as my personality is such that I am always focused on working.  So whatever it is- schedule it, look forward to it, and keep the date with yourself.  You will be glad you did!

There is a saying, “What gets written down gets attended to, and what gets attended to gets done.”

Write down your organizing goals and hold yourself accountable for completing them.

I know it seems like a big chore, but you’ll be glad you did it once you’re done!
