We hear from our clients that they don’t know how all of the clutter piles up around their home. Sometimes it feels like it secretly multiplies, or maybe someone is dropping it off while you’re not looking. The answer is very simple! When you see clutter around your home, the main culprit is not making a decision on what to do with the item when you have it in your hands. Instead of putting something away, which might take just a moment, you decide to do it later. So you put it down, and there it sits, maybe on the kitchen table, maybe on a coffee table, maybe on the floor. This happens again, and again. Before you know it, you have the makings of a pile on your hands. One pile quickly turns into two piles of stuff, and before you know it, things are out of control. Now if you had taken the minimal amount of time to put each of those items away, or throw them away, they never would have piled up. Once they do, putting one thing away now has turned into a half day project to take back your home.
So how do you avoid the piles of clutter? Change your mindset! Try this: If it takes less than two minutes to put something away or finish a task, do it right away. If you don’t, it will take you longer to readdress the issue later on. Most of the tasks that result in clutter are the simple ones that can be done in an instant!
