Go On A Clutter Diet

July 14, 2011 • Uncategorized

I’m usually not a big recommender of organization books.  That may surprise you.  However, I feel that in a lot of cases, they are designed to help you fix the problem one time, not address the cause of the problem and prevent it from happening again.

I also see a lot of clutter and organizing books at my client’s houses.  They are usually unread and have become clutter in their own way.

I was sent a copy of Lorrie’s book to read.  I had heard of it a few times previously from other organizers so I was curious to read it.  I will also admit that I don’t usually read organizing books.  However, I was really curious about this one.

The book starts out discussing how losing weight and getting organized have very similar traits and techniques.  Its a comparison I’ve heard before but Lorie explains it wonderfully.

As the book progresses, you are taking through the steps of determining how and why you become disorganized, what you can do to fix it and how you can stay organized.  I think the last step is one that lots of books don’t address.

One of my favorite aspects of this book are the “Clutter Fitness Exercises” at the end of every chapter.  They are small, actionable steps that you can take today.  Most how to books leave you with the task of determining what comes next and how to do it.  This book provides a clear road map.

In order to be successful at getting organized you need to address exactly how you got unorganized.  Clutter Diet helps you address these issues, regardless of their size.  You will also be asked to make some tough decisions.  Some decisions have to be made BEFORE you even purchase an item.  The Clutter Diet asks the tough questions before an item even comes into your home.  (Its like not buying junk food!)  The Clutter Diet even offers a free downloadable wallet card that asks you the tough questions when they need to be asked, while you’re in the store.

The Clutter Diet is filled with helpful acronyms.  They are designed to help you learn the tools to get and stay organized.  They are easy to remember and will stay with you after you’ve put the book on the shelf.

Another thing I love about this book is the FREE downloadable workbook.  You don’t have to do anything to receive it, just visit their site.  The workbook helps you take the lessons in the book one step further and make them personal to yourself, your home and your goals.  It really solidifies your route to success.

The book is written in easy to read chapters.  So, if you don’t have a ton of time in one sitting, you can read the sections and chapters that pertain to you, when you have time.

This is a book I’m going to be recommending to my clients, both before and after they work with me!

You can buy The Clutter Diet and their other products at their website, located here:

There is a saying, “What gets written down gets attended to, and what gets attended to gets done.”

Write down your organizing goals and hold yourself accountable for completing them.

I know it seems like a big chore, but you’ll be glad you did it once you’re done!
