Holiday Travel Tips~Part One

While we are travling it is very hard to maintain organization.  Even the best of us can “lose it” while preparing for a trip, while we are away or when we return home.  Although for most of us, travling doesn’t represent a large portion of our lives, I wanted to include some of my favorite tips to get you prepared for a ttrip, keep you organized while away from home, and home you get acclimated back to “real life” upon your return.

  • Get out your suitcase about a month before you plan to leave.  Make sure it is still in acceptable condition and make sure it still suits your needs.  If it does not, purchase a new suitcase as soon as possible. If you plan to fly, purchase a light suitcase so that you do not use up part of your weight quota on the suitcase itself.
  • Purchase luggage locks that are TSA certified.  If you luggage is searched, security will not have to cut these locks.
  • Keep your suitcase open on your bedroom floor starting 2-3 weeks prior to your travel.  Throw items into it as you think of them, or throw a note into the suitcase reminding you of the items you’d like to bring.  (A great time to pack items is right after you have done the laundry).
  • Roll clothes so they will arrive less wrinkled.  This also saves space.
  • Buy a wrinkle releaser and or call your hotel to see if there is an iron in the room.
  • Pack an extra tote bag to bring home your vacation purchases.
  • Make a list of the toiletries that you need to purchase.  Buy these on your normal shopping day.
  • Make a list of the items you are taking with you.  (If you don’t have time, bribe your kids to do this for you.)
  • Take a photo of your suitcase and its contents before you leave.  Leave the photo at home.
  • Make copies of all of your credit cards, and passport and leave them at home.  You will need this information if you have to report the cards lost of stolen.
  • Schedule your mail to be held up to two weeks in advance.  Use usps.gov or visit your local post office.  You can request to pick up the mail once you return home or you can even have it delivered to your home.

Basically, they helped us do whatever was required in advance of the move with young children, and the relocation process would've been significantly harder without their assistance.

Quick Tips

Loose items can be a hazard. Make sure that all the items in your car have a place to be put away.

Most cars have places for drinks, personal items, and sunglasses.
