If you’ve ever taken on a home remodeling project, you know that it is a big organizational challenge. You are tasked with scooping up all your important day-to-day items, essentially sealing off a room you use every day, and subjecting yourself to weeks and weeks of construction dust, noise, and debris. Luckily, there are a few steps you can take to ensure you make through to the other side of your remodel happy and satisfied:
1. Make a plan. You know that you will need to make a plan for the aesthetic aspect of the remodel, and have probably spent hours poring over tile samples, paint swatches, and ceramic fixtures. But have you made a plan for how you will spend the time during your remodel? If you are remodeling the kitchen, why not explore some area restaurants during construction time? Similarly, this is a great time to treat yourself to a night out with friends, a trip to the movies, or even a weekend out of town. Seeing your house in disarray and covered in rubble will stress you out – it’s okay to escape for a while!
2. Cover, cover, cover! There are bound to be some items in your house that are impractical to move for a remodel. It may even be less risky to leave delicate items or cumbersome electronics like large screen televisions, heavy couches, and antique armoires rather than trying to move them out of the house or into another room. Invest in plenty of tarps that you can place around these items. Construction sawdust can be very damaging, especially when it comes to electronics. You can even hang a sheet of heavy plastic covering over the entrance to any adjoining rooms.
3. Create a kit of survival essentials. Think about the items you are likely to use over the coming weeks of your remodel. If you are remodeling a kitchen, maybe you can’t live without your espresso machine, toaster, and microwave. If the room in question is your bathroom, make sure you collect your favorite shampoos, lotions, and body washes. The rest of the items in the room should be sorted through and packed up. Its not necessary to create a huge survival kit, but you will be grateful you have some of your comfort items in the long run.
Remember, the best way to succeed at any task is to keep a positive attitude. When you remodel, you take one step closer to your dream home!
