Getting Organized~A Book Review

January 31, 2013 • Uncategorized

I’ve read a lot of organization books, so when I read a new one I’m looking for useful tips and tricks that can be put into action TODAY.  Getting Organized is full of them.

The books is divided up into lots of mini chapters that you can read when you have time and each one gives you a perspective on something you are probably having difficulty with in your personal or work life.  Here are just some of the amazing tips and ideas offered in the book:

-Don’t even think something is too complex or too simple.

-Simply being AWARE of what you are doing, how you are spending time and where you are placing things can get you off the treadmill of ineffectiveness.

-Breaking habits is hard.  Stick with it to make a difference.

-Gadgets will NOT solve your problems but CAN make a difference.

-Be present.

-Determine what is most important to you and stick with it.  Don’t let others make this decision for you.

-The 80/20 rule is present in everything we do.  80 percent of your results come from 20 percent of your efforts.

-Getting organized will make you feel great.  Amazing in fact!

-Do what you love and do it with purpose.  If you are just reacting to things, you will never accomplish your goals.

-Multitasking and workaholic behavior don’t get you ahead in the end.

-A place for everything and everything in its place.

-How you get organized is just as important as getting organized.

-Remember the four basic principles of organization; gathering, filtering, prioritizing and doing.

-Make one of five decisions for everything; discard/recycle, delegate, immediate action, reference file or file for follow up.

-Having an effective filing system can help you keep track of your important items, get them done on time and decrease stress.  I’m a big fan (and user) of the filing system described in the book.

-Focus.  If you allow others (or your own thoughts/email/phone) to interrupt you, little will get accomplished.

-Its doesn’t have to be done perfectly, just get it done.

-Know when to say no.

-Be realistic in what you can accomplish and should on a to do list.

Each of these tips, and MANY more, are described in further detail.  This is a great book to buy for yourself or give as a friend.  I think this would also make a great office reading book and discussion!

You can pick up your own copy of the book on Amazon here:

There is a saying, “What gets written down gets attended to, and what gets attended to gets done.”

Write down your organizing goals and hold yourself accountable for completing them.

I know it seems like a big chore, but you’ll be glad you did it once you’re done!
