The Library Renaissance

February 19, 2013 • Uncategorized

I have falled in love with the library again.  Its such a simple concept, you sign up, pick out books, show them our card and then they let you take home books for free!  Every time I leave the library with books under my arm, I’m so happy I’m skipping out the door.

Okay here are somethings you may not know about your library:

1.  Many libraries offer online management systems that allow you to search the library’s catalog from the comfort of your home.  You can then request items be pulled off the shelves and they are ready when you arrive!  I use this service all the time and it makes it easy and quick for me to drop off and pick up.  Also, you can sometimes place books on hold via this system and when they become available, you will be notified via phone or email.

2.  Children’s programs.  Most libraries offer free children’s programs.  These can range from arts and crafts to reading children’s books aloud.  Most libraries can provide you with a printed schedule of upcoming activities.

3.  If you don’t have a computer or internet access at home, the library offers these services for free.  Take advantage of them!

4.  Job searching activities have increased dramatically at libraries in the past few years.  Many libraries even have a center set up containing resources for those seeking additional education, job listings and even resume workshops.

5.  Periodicals.  Libraries have lots of books that may be cost prohibitive to purchase in their reference section.  You can use them in the library for free.

6.  Less Clutter.  If you borrow a book from the library you don’t have store it in your house when you’re done!

So if you haven’t been to your local library in a while, its time to take a peek again!
