Purge Often and Purge Well
Setting aside times to purge your home of superfluous items will substantially reduce the amount of household clutter that you have to deal with. This is best done four times per year; a good way to remember this is by scheduling it for the beginning of each season. Items that can’t be taken to charity thrift stores should go to the dump or recycling center. A home free of clutter facilitates a healthy and organized mental state.

Every home contains items that homeowners aren’t exactly ready to discard but nonetheless don’t serve a valuable daily function in the home. Some people like to do this on a daily basis, but if you are just starting out it is best to begin with a weekly schedule and work your way towards more ambitious routines. At the beginning of each week, write down everything you need to accomplish. On another page, repeat the list in order of priority. Keep the final list with you, and check off items as you complete them. If you get to the end of your work week with nothing left on the list, your head will be clearer on the weekend because you know you got everything done.
Get a Good Start on Every Day
Productive and organized people tend to have a morning routine. This can be as simple as showering, getting dressed and eating a nutritious breakfast. Even if it is your day off, try to get up early and get a good start to the day. You’ll be amazed at the positive effects this will have on your mental perspective. It is easier to build motivation for daily tasks when your mind is rested and you start your day with a good foundation of activity. Days that start off aimlessly and have no direction can feel wasted or lost in the end.
Get a General-Use Notebook as an Organizational Aid
When used wisely, an all-purpose notebook can be a busy person’s best friend. Find one that fits in your pocket or purse. Keep another in your car, one by the phone, one by the bed, and anywhere else you find yourself getting ideas. These notebooks can be used to record all kinds of things that you don’t want to forget, but shouldn’t be expected to keep at the front of your mind. Part of being organized is constantly thinking about better ways to approach your problems, and inspiration can strike at any moment. Knowing that your important thought won’t be swept away in the tide of hectic day is a stress-reliever in its own right.
Remember, organization is similar to motivation in that it builds on itself. Taking small steps at first will lead to larger successes in the long run. Organization can be overwhelming at first, but if you approach it piece by piece, things that were once difficult, will become simpler.
