Our New Addition #RecipeForMoments

February 11, 2014 • Pets, Reviews, Uncategorized

Life with dogs is just better. We’ve had our border collie Roxy for three years now and over that time she has gone from a dog with severe OCD issues to a well trained, calm and happy dog. It took a lot of work, but it was worth it to give her the home and life she deserves. She is my shadow…following me everywhere and despite being able to see and hear me, she always likes to have at least one paw touching me.  The human animal bond is pretty strong 🙂

Recently, we saw that the rescue facility Roxy came from had another dog with similar OCD issues. He was adorable, 5 months old and having trouble finding a home. I fell in love right away. Before we knew it he arrived at our door and the moment he snuggled us we were smitten. This photo was taken a few moments after he arrived.
Adoption

Summit has the unique challenge of also being deaf.  While I thought this was going to be challenging in training him and communicating with him, it’s not hard at all.  We’ve decided to teach him sign language and he’s progressing quickly.  He looks to us almost constantly for direction and to see where we are.  He too likes to be touching one of us, or Roxy.  In adoption a new dog I was fearful of Roxy’s reaction.  However, besides a little play fighting they’ve already started getting along amazingly.

We just had a special moment though.  Up until now Summit has not known or seemed to want to play fetch.  However, it’s one of Roxy’s all time favorite activities.  She’s play all day every day if she could.  (And could find someone to throw her frisbee for her)

This past week, during a snow storm we were all outside playing.  I brought two toys just to see what they would do.  I threw Roxy’s and she dashed after it, as always.  Then I threw one for Summit.  He went after his too!  It was a very happy moment for us, not unlike a child taking their first steps.  Later that day, both dogs were worn out and needed a nap.  Instead of spreading out and spacing out around the house, they decided to snuggle each other on the couch.  They officially became a family and we couldn’t be happier.
