Small Spaces, Big Organization

May 12, 2014 • Closet Organization Tips, Home Organizing Tips

Living in a small space can be one of the biggest organizational challenges.  NYC is notorious for small closets, oddly shaped rooms and lack of storage.  A fellow blogger, Mari Corona, has shared some photos of her closets with me in order to get a little assistance maximizing the space.

All of the closets seen here are jam packed with stuff and containers.  While I know that is to maximize storage capacity, sometimes larger containers are harder to maneuver than smaller ones.  Putting in a custom closet system is usually the best solution, but it is often cost prohibitive.  Here are some options that are much less expensive and can be utilized in small spaces.

Hallway closets have to hold a lot of stuff.  One of the biggest problems is shoes.  Consider taking shoes out of the closet entirely and using a low profile show organizers such as this one on a wall next to the closet or right next to the door.

We always think about hanging things on the inside of the door, but never the outside.  While it’s not as pretty, it doubles your storage space.  An over the door shoe organizer like this one can be used for shoes, accessories, toys, first aid supplies and so much more.

Anything stacked this high is going to be extremely difficult to use.  I suggest using smaller, plastic “shoe boxes” instead.  They are see through so you can see what is inside.  You can label the contents and then pull them out one at a time when you need them.

Drop from boxes allow you to assess your things more easily.  Containers with a uniform shape are also easier to stack.

Being able to grab your things quickly and then put them away all depends on if you can reach the top shelf.  Have a small step stool on the bottom of every few closets so you don’t put off putting away.  I love small foldable ones like this one that are easy to grab and unfold and not too high.

While there isn’t a lot of room to be “found” in this closet, the hanging bar above the dresser isn’t being used and therefore there is some vertical space there.  A small shelf like this one could store frames, perfume bottles or accessories.

Command hooks could be added to the wall to hold necklaces, scarves or even sunglasses.  I love them because they can be moved easily and without damaging the wall and they come in all sorts of fun colors and sizes.

I love the defending hangers.  This helps you maximize space for hanging items.  The dresser top organizer is also awesome.  (This teenager is amazingly neat and organized!)
