Cloth Diapering

May 22, 2014 • Kids

I’ve been wanting to bring you some info on cloth diapering.  I went right to the source-moms who use them.  Here are some questions I asked them and their honest answers.   Want more info? Let me know!
1.  What made you decide to go the cloth diapering route?
We exclusively used (and recommended) pampers swaddlers sensitive and then just pamper swaddlers for the bigger babies to all of our friends and family. We used them with our daughter and now with our son. When he was about 6 months old he bumped into a size 4. The diapers STINK like chemicals and it grossed me out. His blowouts were uncontrollable so I began looking into cloth. I honestly thought they would be like the old style rubber pants. I immediately threw myself into the wonderful world of youtube and watched hours of videos on cloth diaper reviews, wash routines and accessories.
2.  Is it as difficult as parents think it will be?
Not at all! People hear I use cloth and say things like “bless your heart” or “more power to you, I couldn’t handle it” and I just think to myself ‘Its just an extra load of laundry every other day’

3.  How has it positively effected your and your baby’s life?
It makes me very happy to buy diapers. I get really excited when he gets a new diaper and I plan his outfits to match. I always take my favorite prints for things like doctors appointments. He has never really been prone to diaper rashes but I can honestly say that he never gets them with cloth. Its also pretty exciting that his blowouts have completely stopped.
4.  Is cloth diapering cost effective?
Yes, if you don’t get too caught up in the prints and colors. Its so easy to spend so much more money than you need to for special edition prints or holiday diapers. You could cloth diaper a child through potty training with the same diapers.
5.  How can you fit cloth diapering into your busy lifestyle?
If you have 10 minutes every other day, you can use cloth. Its a matter of dumping the load into the washer (2 minutes) and hanging to dry (5-7 minutes). If you use AIO (all in one) diapers you don’t have to stuff and fold as the diapers are always ready to go. Even pocket diapers only take me 10-15 minutes every other day to stuff and fold.
6.  What else would you like parents to know about cloth diapering?
Its not nearly as hard or disgusting as people make it seem. I see my sons diapers as baby underwear. We didn’t see the “green” value of cloth until after we began using it exclusively and realize we didn’t have bags of dirty diapers from the diaper genie.  The best part for us, no chemical smell.
7.  How old are your children?
I am a 25 year old mother of 2. I am a stay at home Mom, I have a 5 year old in Kindergarten and a 9 month old.
