I always tell my clients, let’s organize in an area that bothers you the most. Sometimes those areas aren’t rooms or big spaces, they are small things that slow you down throughout the day. We’re often so busy we keep racing, deal with the mess and move right along without stopping to FIX the problem. In reality, a little invested time can pay out dividends down the road.
I had a few extra large plastic show box sized totes where I kept all of my holiday figurines. I don’t have a lot, but I do like to change out some seasonal bears and Willow Tree angels with the seasons. I’ve had these bears since I was a kid and I still love them. The hinges on these totes were broken and they were a pain to open and they never closed just right. Recently the totes fell off a shelf (completely my fault!) and lots of things broke and needed to be repaired. I realized then, I needed to take the time to create a better system.
I used these Sterilite totes I bought on Amazon. At the time I purchased, they were a little under a dollar a box. I also used some packing foam I’d gotten in a package I received previously. (It’s all about reusing and repurposing! It saves you time and money and otherwise, this packing material would have ended up in a landfill.)
I cut the material to fit the bottom of the containers. I didn’t do it precisely because I wanted there to be a little extra going up that sides of the containers.
Then, I grouped the figurines into like categories. I made sure to have single layers, and to add extra padding as needed. Finally, I labeled the groups and I was good to go. These containers are awesome because you can see the contents and they don’t take up much space on a shelf. They are also stackable!
This method would work with anything you want to organize; toys, cosmetics, office supplies, jewelry, pantry items, etc. The list is really endless. So remember-sort, protect, containerize and label! (You can add in purging if you have items that could be donated!)
