I love pretty containers. However, I DON’T love the price tags that come with them. I love organizing with things you already have around your home or even items from the dollar store. I wanted to share with you how you could really make a dollar store find something special.
This box was something I received a gift in a few years ago. However, I recently bought a similar box (sold as a photo storage box) at the dollar store. Remember, you can use any color and any color paint to make any combination that matches your decor. Go a little crazy with it!
So I had a lot of this on hand in my craft area….BUT it’s all readily available at your local craft stores. Here’s what I used:
Blue Painter’s Tape
Foam Pouncers
Multi Surface Paint
Silkscreen Stencil (This one is by Martha Stewart)
Box
I removed the lid from the box and placed the stencil on top. I taped it down on all four sides in order to get it to stay in place.
I used a foam pouncer to push the paint through the screen. It’s a fine line between pushing too much through and not filing in the stencil enough. You might even want to test out your technique on another surface before doing your display box.
Once your done with the paint, peel off the tape, wash your stencil and let your box dry. Now while you can’t usually see the tops of boxes, I really like turning one on it’s side and one like this with a design is a perfect way to decorate AND organize. In the living room use a box like this for books, DVDs or video games. In the bedroom put in accessories or cosmetics. Kids’ rooms always need something to be tidied; toys, arts and craft supplies or even those “collections” your child holds dear.
This is a great example of an easy and fast way to dress up something from the dollar store. Have a beautiful AND organized home doesn’t have to be expensive.
