Are there restaurants?
There are a few small restaurants…..some are fancier than others and none are inexpensive. If you want fries or a lobster roll, you’re in luck.
What do people do?
Most of the community are lobster men and women. This island produces the most lobster per capita of anywhere in the world. Many people run the stores and restaurants and others teach and coach at the school.
Is there a school?
There is one school and all students from first grand through 12th grade attend. The average class size is about 15.
How big is the island?
The island is 167 square miles. That comes out to about 8 miles long from top to bottom.
How many people live on the island?
The year round population is officially about 1200. During the summer months, especially the week of the 4th of July, population can spike to five thousand.
Are there famous people on the island?
Robert Indiana is a year round resident. His amazing artwork is displayed all over the country. Margaret Brown, author of Goodnight Moon, also had a summer home on the island. She didn’t have plumbing, electricity or a road to her home.
Are there lighthouses?
Yes, there are a few and they are still functional. The town manager position salary includes the use of a light house home.
