One Step to Simplify Spring Cleaning ~ Guest Blog Post

Did you know that getting rid of clutter would eliminate 40% of housework in the average home? (National Soap and Detergent Association)

We are already half way through spring and many of us have not yet started the “spring cleaning” we would really like to do. Maybe you put it off because it seems to be too big of a task, so why not take one easy step to simplify it.

Clean

Instead of just jumping in to do the cleaning, this year begin by getting rid of the clutter, going below the surface to reduce and organize your things. It may take a little extra time and effort, but the end result will be well worth it. You will enjoy your beautiful, clean and well-functioning home or office and appreciate the many hours of housework you’ll save.

Here are a few ways to make that spring cleaning go faster and smoother.

  • · Make a plan.

o Write a to-do list so you can stay on task. Break your project into manageable tasks which can be completed in just a few minutes. For example, instead of writing a large task like “Organize the kitchen”, try listing “Organize the utensil drawers”, “Sort through the food pantry”, etc., as individual tasks. Listing smaller segments of a project will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed.

o Gather all your supplies beforehand. You don’t want to have to stop in the middle of a task because you are not prepared. If you need a silverware holder for your drawer, don’t try to organize that drawer without it. Save that task until you have acquired the necessary tools, so you can make good use of your time.

o Merge similar “to-dos”. As you clean and organize an area, look for unnecessary items you can eliminate. For example, when changing your closet over from winter to summer clothes, take time to sort through your clothing and get rid of items that have not been worn in the last year or do not fit.

  • · Make it fun.

o Open the blinds and windows, and let in the sunshine and fresh air.

o Play your favorite music. Music enables bodies to relax and allows the mind to concentrate more on the task at hand.

o Get the family involved. If you have kids, give them their own task to accomplish. Set a timer and ask them to “beat the clock.” This is a great tool for adults too. Setting a time limit helps you stay focused and keep moving forward.

  • · Make it a celebration!

o Reward yourself and all those involved in the organizing process. Once you have reached your goal, take time to celebrate with a special night out, a fun dessert, or a game.

o Recognition of your accomplishment doesn’t have to end once you get things organized. Take time to notice and celebrate several months of maintaining a clutter-free space.

Don’t dread this year’s spring cleaning; rather, look forward to enjoying the beautiful spring weather and the extra time and energy you’ll have thanks to your de-cluttered space.

Bonnie, part of the fun for me in my spring cleaning is decluttering. Yes, I find it fun! Sorting through what can be recycled or donated. I love to see boxes fill with stuff that will soon find new homes. I really do. It brings me much joy!
