I recently had a dear friend want some assistance with her junk drawer. Well, she lives hundreds of miles away. So, just like I do with my coaching clients, I walked her through the process of how to purge, how to buy supplies and how to organize the drawer.
Here is the before picture:
The first step was purging out the junk. This is a common dumping ground for items you have no idea what to do with otherwise. It’s a great place for decisions to go unmade and clutter to accumulate. To make it worse, most of us grew up with a junk drawer and we don’t know any better. Get rid of anything you haven’t used. Get rid of anything that DOESN’T SERVE A PURPOSE.
Next, I want you to take the measurements of your drawer. While I think it’s best to buy drawer organizers that can be configured in lots of different ways, a common problem is not knowing how deep your drawer is.
When looking for drawer organizers, make sure you buy ones that are durable and an easily be cleaned when they need it down the road. I love these:
Categories I recommend are:
Batteries
Personal items-such as tissues, hand sanitizer
First aid-band aids, allergy medications
Tools-screwdriver, mini hammer, picture hangers
Office Supplies-paper clips, rubber bands, stamps
Finally, it’s time to put it all back together! Assemble things so you can grab them easily and quickly. Once you’ve organized the space, it’s time to make a chance in your behavior. When you go to put something away, if it doesn’t fit one of the groupings you’ve created, think twice before you put it down!
So, want to see how her drawer turned out? It’s pretty awesome!
