We’ve talked about how to keep your pets healthy and we’ve talked about how to maintain their weight. Now, I want to share with you the story and journey of one dog (and her family) who lost weight and is now living a better life.

This is Summit…and the look he gives me when he wants to play….how can I resist?

Check out Miley’s 10 Week Turn Around on her blog. Miley’s family realized that they couldn’t feel her ribs anymore and she wasn’t her usual self. This can happen to any pet owner. We go about our daily routine and give our dogs some table scraps or one too many treats. Over time, it adds up and they start to pack on a few pounds. I mean, that has happened to me!
Miley ate Hill’s® Science Diet® Perfect Weight for ten weeks and got frequent exercise. Slowly and steadily she lost weight and gained back her energy. She’s a more playful pup now and excited for daily workouts with her family.
Here are something to keep in mind. An over weight dog can be sluggish and lack energy. It’s not just their weight that’s effected, it’s their entire way of life. The same way you want to feel healthy and fit all day through, is the same way your dog should feel. Extra pounds can also effect their skin, fur and eyes. Healthy inside=healthy outside.
So how can you ensure your pup is getting enough exercise? There are lots of ways but here are a few of my favorites:
Everyone knows you should walk your dog. Some people consider letting the dog “out” to roam the yard enough of a workout and it’s just not enough. While walking your dog, on a leash, in a structured setting, you can improve calorie burn for both of you by adding in some jogging or sprints. Run between telephone poles or race back to the house. Keep them guessing 🙂
You can play tag with your dog. Chase each other around the yard and see how you do. Fetch also gets your dog running around quickly. See what your dog loves and go from there!
Here is my pup waiting for me to throw the “flip” (frisbee) again….she’s not too patient! (Picture on left)
For even more resistance during your daily walks, find some stairs or a hill and add it into your routine. Do it a few times to increase your fitness level.
As always, make sure you and your doggie hydrate properly!
