Someone recently asked me for some career advice. I helped them as best I could, but I realized that since I was a recent college graduate, a lot has changed. More importantly, it’s going to KEEP changing….
Change is one of the hardest things we deal with in our lives. When it intersects with career? Even harder. So what do we do? I recently was able to read a copy of Evaluate Your Career by Helen Horyza…here are some nuggets of wisdom on the book’s pages….these relate to careers AND life.
- Recognize if the conflict is external or internal. Are you bored at your current job? Or are you arguing with co-workers? Determine if the change is needed due to factors within yourself or externally as the first step.
- When we face times of uncertainty, we often feel as if we need to go into hyperdrive and work longer hours and more days. Sometimes, taking a break and going inwards will give us the answers we’re looking for.

3. If you’ve always thought about something; a hobby, a business or a career, chances are you should pursue it. Take the time now, even if it’s just for 10 minutes to do some research or make a contact in that field. Give yourself permission to explore.
4. Even if you think you know what life holds and what your path may be, things change. Always be prepared and open to new challenges and opportunities.
If you want to get a copy of Helen’s book…you can find it on Amazon…this makes a great gift for anyone in your life looking to learn more about what the future holds!
